A Luxurious Weekend Getaway in Northern Virginia: My Stay at The Salamander Resort

This past weekend, I had the joy of experiencing a luxury staycation right here in my home state of Virginia—and it left me both inspired and wanting more. Nestled in the heart of wine country, just an hour from Washington, D.C., is the charming town of Middleburg, home to one of the most elegant and serene retreats I’ve ever stayed at: The Salamander Resort & Spa.

From the moment I arrived, it felt like I was transported to another world—one filled with beautiful landscapes, world-class amenities, and the kind of calm you can only find in a place so connected to nature.

The Salamander: Where Luxury Meets Heart

Let’s start with the resort itself. The Salamander is not just a hotel—it’s an experience. From the stunning equestrian-inspired design to the immaculate grounds, it strikes the perfect balance between sophisticated and cozy. Their team goes above and beyond to make every guest feel special. I was genuinely blown away by how kind, attentive, and accommodating the staff were throughout my stay.

And the food? Incredible. Dining at Harrimans Virginia Piedmont Grill was a culinary highlight, with every dish thoughtfully prepared and paired perfectly with local wines. Whether you’re enjoying breakfast with a view or a multi-course dinner, it’s a must during your stay.

For those looking to unwind, the Salamander Spa is one of the best I’ve ever experienced. Between the massages, sauna, and peaceful atmosphere, it’s the ideal place to disconnect and recharge.

Exploring Middleburg and Beyond

One of my favorite things about staying at The Salamander is how close it is to everything—and how easy they make it to explore. They offer a complimentary luxury car service that takes guests to and from nearby wineries, breweries, and restaurants. It’s such a thoughtful and convenient touch that makes the entire experience feel seamless.

We visited Cana Vineyards—a gorgeous spot with sweeping views and delicious wine flights—and Lost Barrel Brewing, a stylish, modern brewery with great outdoor space and a relaxed vibe. Each had its own charm, and both are a must-visit when you’re in the area.

For dinner, we ventured out to The Red Fox Inn & Tavern, one of the oldest inns in America, and soaked in the history over a cozy, upscale meal. If you love intimate, candlelit settings and classic fare, you’ll love it.

A Quick City Stop

For lunch on our second day, we made a quick detour to The Wharf in Washington, D.C., where we had a fantastic Mediterranean meal at ilili—a beautiful, waterfront restaurant with flavors that transported us straight to the shores of the Mediterranean. It was the perfect way to wrap up a luxurious weekend.
